The MR Therapy Centre is the only site in the UK offering Magnetic Resonance-guided Focussed Ultrasound (MRgFUS) treatment of uterine fibroids. It was set up in 2006 for this very purpose, and was officially opened by Lady Weinstock in 2006. In this time, the centre has treated over 600 patients.
It also supports the continuation of a research programme into new applications of focussed ultrasound, such as the alleviation of bone metastasis, the destruction of liver tumours in a non-invasive manner, the treatment of prostate cancer, and to treat chronic back pain caused by facet joint disease.
We work closely with the National Fibroid Clinic and the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Unit at St Mary’s Hospital, and thus bring together what is perhaps the best expertise on this condition available in the UK.
Most of all however, the MR Therapy Centre is a patient-focussed, friendly team. Our patients are the most important part of our work and we work closely with them at every stage of the process, from assessment, to funding support, to treatment.
We have considerable experience in applying for NHS funding for MRgFUS, and have also built good relationships with many insurance companies, some of which will fund individual applications for MRgFUS.
The day-to-day operation of the MR Therapy Centre is led by Professor Wladyslaw Gedroyc, MBBS MRCP FRCR, Director and Consultant Radiologist, and Sister Yvonne Bower, Nurse Practitioner and Unit Manager.
Professor Gedroyc holds a Personal Chair in Radiology at Imperial College London, is a Consultant Radiologist at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, and Medical Director of Magnetic Resonance Imaging at St Mary’s Hospital. He has over 90 papers published in peer reviewed journals, mostly on MR related topics. These include multiple research papers on interventional MRI and the development of MRgFUS in various clinical situations. He is an international expert on MR-guided interventional techniques having treated nearly 500 patients with this procedure.
Sister Bower holds a Bachelor of Health Sciences (Nursing) degree from the University of Auckland, and is a member of the Royal College of Nursing. She has more than ten years experience in radiology and clinical trials. She joined the MR Therapy Centre Team in 2010 and overseas all clinical aspects of our work. She is an active member of the multi-disciplinary team and works closely with all MRgFUS patients at every stage of the process.
We are also privileged to be working closely with:
Mr Stephen Quinn, MB BS, BSc (Hons), MRCOG, is Gynaecology Clinical Research Fellow for the National Fibroids Clinic at St Mary’s Hospital. He qualified in medicine from University College, London, and has worked in both Australia and Ireland. He currently holds a national training number in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in the North West Thames area, and is undertaking research investigating uterine fibroids and MRgFUS. Mr Quinn works closely with Professor Lesley Regan and Professor Gedroyc, and is a crucial member of the multi-disciplinary team which assesses fibroid sufferers.
The management team are supported by a highly experienced team of directors, medical staff, nurses, radiographers and administrative staff. All staff within the organisation attend corporate and local inductions, annual performance assessment with regular periodic review, and are encouraged to attend development activities to strengthen key skills.
As we are based at St Mary’s Hospital (Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust) our unit is also serviced by pharmacists, porters, domestic staff, maintenance staff and security staff employed by the Trust. Patients attending the MR Therapy Centre have access to acute services on this site including A&E and a crash team in the event of an emergency.
